What’s New in This Nintendo Switch Online N64 Update
Donkey Kong Country 3
Originally released on Super Nintendo but also part of N64’s re-release line, this game gives Dixie and newcomer Kiddy Kong the spotlight. With highly creative level design, a new overworld mechanic, and David Wise’s moody soundtrack, it’s an overlooked closer to the trilogy that’s perfect for co-op play and late-night sessions.
Yoshi’s Story
Often misunderstood on release, Yoshi’s Story leaned into a fully illustrated storybook style and score-based platforming. Its pastel colors, branching fruit-collecting gameplay, and open-ended level design make it unlike anything else in the N64 catalog. It’s more experimental than it first appears — and surprisingly replayable.
Excitebike 64
This might be the real surprise of the drop. A 3D evolution of the NES classic, Excitebike 64 introduced terrain deformation, physics-based racing, and a killer sense of speed. It was quietly one of the most technically advanced games on the system and holds up shockingly well, especially with NSO’s smoother emulation.
Final Thoughts
With each update, NSO’s N64 library is starting to look less like a greatest hits reel and more like a time capsule of weird brilliance. These games might not have topped charts, but they absolutely shaped what the N64 felt like — and it’s great to have them back.
