Square Enix reportedly targets early 2026 for Dragon Quest VII Remake
No platforms were confirmed, but with Nintendo Switch 2 now a major part of Square Enix’s launch strategy, it seems likely that a remake of this scope would make its way to the platform—especially considering the 3DS version’s popularity among handheld players.
There was no mention of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate in the leak, a game announced over four years ago that has yet to receive a proper update. Square Enix’s silence on that front continues to raise questions about where the series is headed next—and how soon fans can expect it.

A personal favorite that deserves another shot
I’ll be honest—Dragon Quest VII always felt like one of the more overlooked entries, at least in the West. It didn’t get the mainstream recognition of VIII or XI, but once you got through the slow intro, there was a deeply emotional time-traveling story packed with classic DQ charm. The 3DS version helped fix the pacing issues, but a proper modern remake could finally give it the spotlight it never fully got.
If this remake follows the blueprint of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake or even takes notes from Final Fantasy VII Remake, we might be in for something special. A stronger visual overhaul, more streamlined chapter transitions, and maybe even quality-of-life updates to the job system would go a long way in making this one of the definitive ways to experience the game.
Dragon Quest VII was originally the best-selling PlayStation title in Japan during its launch year, selling over 4 million copies domestically. Its localization for North America took over two years, making it one of the slowest turnarounds in the series’ history.
