Sonic Adventure Remakes Not Happening, Says Sonic Team Head

Share

Sonic Adventure and its sequel remain some of the most beloved entries in Sonic’s long-running history—but fans hoping for modern remakes may want to temper expectations. In a new comment, Sonic Team head Takahashi Iizuka shared that remaking those titles would require as much work as creating an entirely new game.

Sonic Adventure Remakes Are Not in Development

Despite years of fan requests, Iizuka clarified that there are currently no plans to revive Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2. While acknowledging the enduring love for the Dreamcast-era games, he explained that the effort needed to modernize them would be equivalent to building a new title from scratch.

“I really am appreciative for everyone who likes the Sonic Adventure series,” Iizuka said, “but when I think about what it would take to bring that game up to the standards and expectations of what the modern gaming audience would want, I think it would be about as much time and energy as it would to make a new title.”

Instead of going back, Iizuka hinted that creating a brand-new Sonic experience might be a better use of Sonic Team’s development resources. It’s a practical answer, even if it’s a bit of a disappointment for fans still nostalgic for Sonic’s early 3D outings.

Why Fans Still Want Adventure Remakes

The original Sonic Adventure games introduced many franchise-firsts: 3D gameplay, multiple character stories, Chao Gardens, and an ambitious soundtrack. While they’ve aged unevenly, they still represent a bold creative swing that shaped the Sonic brand during the Dreamcast era. Even today, fans share mods and dream scenarios of how a modern remake could look on current-gen systems like Switch 2 or PlayStation 5.
