Fortnite’s Thanos Crossover Began With a 6-Hour Call

Share

Before Fortnite became known for multiverse crossovers and cinematic skins, it took one pivotal conversation to make it all possible. According to new comments from Pete Wanat, president of interactive at AGBO, it took a six-hour call to convince Epic Games to include Thanos in the game.

The Crossover That Changed Everything

The story comes from Wanat’s recounting of a 6-hour pitch meeting with Donald Mustard, then Creative Director at Epic. At the time, Fortnite was still hesitant to allow external characters into its world. But AGBO, the production studio behind the Avengers films, kept pushing—and eventually secured a deal that would introduce Thanos as an in-game boss during the Infinity War era.

This moment marked the first time Fortnite broke open its universe to third-party icons. It wasn’t just a marketing stunt—it became the foundation for the crossover-heavy direction Fortnite would follow for years, from Naruto to Star Wars to Travis Scott.

“If that call hadn’t happened, there’s a good chance none of it would have existed—no Marvel skins, no themed battle passes, no universe of Fortnite crossovers.”

With Fortnite now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and supporting first-person mode, it’s easy to forget how bold the Thanos crossover seemed back then. But according to Wanat, it was the turning point that redefined how Fortnite connected with pop culture—and helped it evolve into the live-service juggernaut we know today.

More Than a Snap

The six-hour call that brought Thanos Crossover to Fortnite didn’t just change the game—it changed Epic’s vision. That moment kicked off a new era of gaming collaborations that still shapes how Fortnite grows in 2025.
