Mortal Kombat 1 support ends as NetherRealm confirms it is officially shifting focus to its next major project. The studio made the announcement via social media following the release of the game’s Definitive Edition last week — confirming no further DLC characters or story expansions are planned.
Although balance patches and technical fixes will continue for now, NetherRealm Studios has made it clear: Mortal Kombat 1 is done with new content.

Official Word: Mortal Kombat 1 Support Ends
In a statement shared with fans, NetherRealm Studios said:
“We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.”
This confirms reports from late last year that plans for a third Kombat Pack and expanded story mode had been shelved. It’s a surprise move for many — especially given earlier comments by series co-creator Ed Boon about “years of content.”
What’s Next for NetherRealm Studios?
No new project has been revealed yet, but speculation is already swirling. With Mortal Kombat 1 support ending, many fans are hoping for a return to Injustice or even a new IP entirely. The shift in focus also aligns with Warner Bros.’ broader strategy to rotate its premium studios between major franchises.
In the meantime, the Definitive Edition of Mortal Kombat 1 is now available on Nintendo Switch for $59.99 — and remains one of the platform’s most ambitious fighting game ports.
