Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Could Be Coming to Nintendo Switch

Focus Entertainment may be eyeing the Nintendo Switch 2 for its upcoming fantasy RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, according to early developer comments following the game’s stunning reveal trailer at Summer Game Fest.

While not officially confirmed, developers behind the title have expressed public interest in bringing the game to Nintendo’s next-generation system. In an interview, they called the idea of a Switch 2 version “interesting,” and said they’re “keeping an eye” on what the platform can deliver.

What is Expedition 33?

Expedition 33 is a turn-based, narrative-driven RPG set in a stylized dreamlike world filled with paintbrush combat, surreal landscapes, and unique visual storytelling. Developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, the game draws comparisons to Persona, Bravely Default, and Octopath Traveler in terms of combat and mood.

It’s already slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025. No mention of the Switch 1 has been made, further hinting that any potential Nintendo release would likely be targeting the more powerful Switch 2 hardware instead.

Why Switch 2 Makes Sense

Unlike the original Switch, which struggled with demanding third-party RPGs, the Switch 2’s 12GB of RAM and DLSS 3.1 support open the door for modern cinematic RPGs like Expedition 33 to run with full fidelity — without heavy visual downgrades or loading bottlenecks.

If the game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 or a similar high-fidelity pipeline, porting it to Switch 1 would be unlikely. But the Switch 2? That’s a real possibility. Its stronger GPU and 4K docked capabilities make it a viable platform for more stylized, performance-sensitive RPGs.

Developer Says “No Promises, But We’re Watching”

While Focus Entertainment hasn’t confirmed a Switch 2 version, their comments make it clear they’re not ignoring Nintendo’s new platform. When asked directly whether a Nintendo port was being considered, a representative reportedly said:

“We’ve seen what Switch 2 is capable of, and it’s very interesting. No promises yet, but we’re definitely watching closely.”

This kind of statement usually signals internal evaluation is underway — especially when it follows a high-profile trailer drop and public fan speculation.

Final Thoughts

While nothing is confirmed, the possibility of Expedition 33 on Nintendo Switch 2 would be a big win for fans of artistic, turn-based RPGs. It’s rare to see a new IP from a third-party publisher get this kind of early buzz — and it’s even rarer for them to be interested in Nintendo hardware this early.

With Switch 2 shaping up to be more powerful and third-party-friendly than ever, Expedition 33 could be exactly the kind of breakout title that helps define the system’s RPG legacy.
